They live in poverty in subhuman conditions devoid of basic needs such as nutrition, clothing, housing and sanitary facilities. They have no prospect for education or training opportunities that would empower them to function as productive citizens in the future.
OMI begining
The vision for this project came from Mimi Getahun , who had a dream to build an orphanage which would provide abandoned children with adequate food, shelter, safety, love, support, and training for future independence. Ever since she was a teenager, Mimi dreamed of opening an orphanage and school in Ethiopia. After many years away from her homeland,Ethiopia, in 1999, she visited her home. During the visit, she could not forget the many orphans whom she met along her way.It was very difficult to explain the terrible conditions children face in the streets Ethiopia. Thousands of children and families in Ethiopia live on $1.00 per day for food. It became evident that a large number of children lived in cardboard houses and only the garbage dump as their neighborhood. As a result, there is terrible poverty, disease, lack of education, and abandonment of children. Mimi was burdened by the poverty and despair that gripped this emerging generation of orphans. Unable to turn back to their cries, she set out to fight on behalf of these orphans for a chance of a better life and made a decision to make a difference. After meeting with community leaders, various missionary workers, and the concerned citizens, Mimi committed her efforts to building a home for abandoned children that would allow these children to escape terrible poverty, disease, and abandonment, and to replace it with love, care, support, education, career training, and future independence. In 2003 she moved to Ethiopia in order to start One Mission International. She was able to take the first step in making that dream a reality. In 2005 – with her own money, without land, without any support she just started. She set out to fight on behalf of these orphans for a chance of a better life.OMI began with one Ethiopian woman that chose to dedicate herself to giving orphaned and abandoned children the tools to change their own lives and futures.
OMI seeks to offer holistic,community-oriented care to orphans and vulnerable children. Through networking with generous people throughout the world. We work towards the common end of securing hope and a promising future for society's most vulnerable youth.
